Early Voting Site Relocated from Marlborough to Highland

Southern Ulster County voters will no longer have access to an early voting site in Marlborough this fall. The Ulster County Board of Elections (BOE) confirmed that the location has been relocated from the Marlborough Community Center to the Highland American Legion. The BOE website has also been updated with a revised map showing the change.

According to a BOE memo, the agency had reached an agreement with the Town of Marlborough to pay $4,000 for the use of the Community Center. However, Ulster BOE Commissioner John Quigley said the town never formally notified the Board that the agreement was canceled. He learned secondhand at a Marlborough Republican event that Supervisor Scott Corcoran had withdrawn from the agreement and that the town reportedly scheduled other events in the facility on the first two days of early voting—Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26—creating a conflict.

The Marlborough Community Center underwent a major renovation completed last year, funded largely by more than $500,000 in state grant money. Despite that investment, voters in Southern Ulster will now need to travel to Highland for early voting.

Early voting in Ulster County begins on Saturday, October 25, at the Highland American Legion. Voters are encouraged to check the Ulster County Board of Elections website for the most current information on polling sites and schedules.

In response to our article, Town Supervisor Scott Corcoran sent the below clarifying memo from the BOE. Supervisor Corcoran also stated that the Town never executed an agreement with the BOE, and that the error is with them. He also stated that the committed amount was not finalized, and that the BOE was unable to commit to a fair cost-per-day amount for use of the Community Center.

Republican commissioner for the Board of Elections stated in an interview with the Daily Freeman that Marlborough “is the only location in the county that requires the Board of Elections to pay a usage fee for early voting.”
